Have we lost our African heritage in our interior design trends?

Remember how it was growing up? Especially in the village?

No electricity but we would all cuddle up closely in the evenings and bond over endless stories together with loved ones.

In that moment we got to learn more and more about our cultural heritage and history. With times changing in this modern era of social media, we have been exposed to various global design styles and trends which we absolutely love and appreciate, however, our heritage which represents our values and beliefs still tops the list of must have items in our spaces.

Nothing says African more than warm earthy tones with the hues of brown, light orange, yellow and muted red: simply think about grandma’s village home with the earthy floors and walls and the beautiful farm outside with the smell of fresh air or the image of the setting sun in the Maasai Mara..

Reconnecting with nature is a great thought process and one sure way when thinking about African theme, the use of natural items such as clay, sisal, wood, animal hide, screams it even better.

Some interesting ideas on how to incorporate African theme within your space: the famous cow hide drum which can serve as a coffee table within a living room

We must admit we remember the famous table, as it featured in almost all homes, nothing screams African more than this, other than drumming to some great music the table creates a focal point and a great conversation starter within a space.

The “uteo” as a tray or in different sizes hang on the wall, creating visual interest and appeal. Using them in different sizes and colours enhances ones space and is an inexpensive way to beautify literally any space: along a corridor, empty wall within the living/dining area, bedroom headboard area and anywhere else if one doesn’t want bare walls. Decorative sisal baskets are a great way to incorporate African design, with their striking appeal one can store toys, blankets, pillows or also use them as a flower pot for artificial plants.

Create a display cabinet to showcase African themed artifacts and motifs just like we did with this shelf .This is usually a great opportunity to showcase one’s heritage in a visually appealing way.

Another clever way of introducing African theme within a space is through fabric: in the form of curtains, throw pillows throw blankets, Rugs

Please let us know and feel free to share images on how you’ve incorporated African theme within your space.
